ERA Announces Election Results

The European Radon Association (ERA) has just completed the annual process of electing four officer positions: ERA President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The new officer appointments will take effect on 1 January 2026 along with the formation of the new Executive Committee. The elections are important because the chosen Executive Committee takes on a central role in setting the ERA’s direction.

The candidates elected for the four positions are as follows:

President: Carmen Carpentieri
Vice President: Paulo Norte Pinto
Treasurer: Boris Dehandschutter
Secretary: José-Luis Gutiérrez Villlanueva

What is the ERA’s mission?

The ERA’s mission is to reduce the health burden of radon exposure in Europe by promoting radon measurement, mitigation strategies, public awareness, and standards for indoor radon metrology and prevention. The association also acts as a network and consultative body, bringing together professionals and stakeholders across Europe.

The ERA has two main organs – the Executive Committee and the General Assembly. An Ordinary General Assembly takes place once a year, ordinary ERA members receive one vote and each company member has two votes per company. The objectives of the ERA are:

  • To promote and to participate in activities to reduce radon risk within the population, recognizing radon as the second cause for lung cancer.
  • To promote public awareness of radon risk, radon measurement, radon mitigation and radon preventative techniques.
  • To ensure/develop/adopt quality standards in radon measurement, radon mitigation and radon prevention in new constructions.
  • To provide an effective partnership between radon professionals in the field and other interested public and private stakeholders.
  • To serve as a consultative body with regards to laws and regulations concerning radon. To organize an annual Radon conference or workshop combining scientific presentations and technical exhibitions from companies working with radon.
  • Strive for the highest standard of fairness and integrity.

What can you expect from the Executive Committee?

If you are a member of the Executive Committee you are required to devote time pro bono to the association. The committee  meets on average once every 1.5 months. There are working groups within the committee and also other activities that require input. All members of the committee must be committed to the objectives of the ERA and proactively engage to enhance public awareness of the dangers of radon.

The ERA is a non- profit International Organisation registered under Belgian law (number 549.923.484). It has been formed to serve the interests of the European radon community. To this end, it is unselfish in its activity. As the ERA is purely for public benefit, its funds may only be utilised for purposes in accordance with the statutes. Therefore, potential travelling costs are not covered by the ERA. In addition, it may not favour any person by means of expenditures which are foreign to the objectives of the Association. The ERA’s code of ethics can be found here and its statutes here.

As we close out the year, the ERA would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year.
